Steam Summer Sale – Sunday, 6/22 Recap, HP14 Woot! Offer, HumbleBundle Audio Books

Good afternoon!  Today just a quick recap of the games on sale as part of the Steam Summer Sale as of 1 PM today, 6/22/14 along with a couple other deals happening now from Woot! and HumbleBundle.

Steam Summer Sale

Battleblock Theater – $3.74 (75% off)

This game has been out for some time now on XB360 but is a more recent release on Steam. By the creators of Castle Crashers, it is a somewhat similar game but has far more emphasis on puzzles, platforming, and humor. It features local and online multiplayer and a TON of content for the price.  Strongly recommend it at this price.

Borderlands 2 – $4.99 (75% off) / Game of the Year Edition $9.99 (75% off)

First, please note that the Borderlands 2 Game of the Year (GOTY) edition is ALSO on sale for 75% off, making it $9.99 – and that is DEFINITELY the one to buy, as for $5 more you’re getting an absurd amount of additional content. The one on the front store page is just the game itself.

If you haven’t played Borderlands 2, it is basically the Diablo/Torchlight of FPS games, though Borderlands 2 has more story and humor than the first. The shooting mechanics themselves are still a bit lacking in impact but I loved this game and highly recommend it if you haven’t played it. Definitely playable solo but far better with 2-4 player online co-op.  For $10, if you have one or more friends you can talk into buying this as well, buy it.  This is the cheapest price I’ve ever seen on this game.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning – $4.99 (75% off) / Kingdoms of Amalur Collection – $9.99 (75% off)

As noted above with Borderlands 2, you can get the game plus DLC for 75% off, though this is less a slam-dunk than Borderlands. The game by itself for $5 is a bargain as like with Skyrim, this is a massive single-player RPG. Like Skyrim, the DLC is supposedly a mixed bag and considered non-essential, so the game alone may be the way to go here. This game is known for having one of the best action combat systems in an RPG, ever.

Having said that, it is on sale for $5 pretty regularly, so while it is a great deal, I’d say it isn’t a must buy.

Outlast – $4.99 (75% off)

Popular horror game, solid reviews, at this price pretty frequently.  Pick it up if you’ve had your eye on it, otherwise, no rush here.

Planetary Annihilation – $16.99 (66% off)

I can’t tell you much on this one. Decent to positive feedback on the game, still early access. Solid discount if you were thinking of buying it upon release.

South Park; The Stick of Truth – $40.19 (33% off)

From the creators of Fallout: New Vegas, this is supposed to be a fantastic game. Personally, I’m in no rush to play it so I’m waiting until it drops closer to $15-20 (most likely the Steam Winter Sale), but if you’ve had your eye on it, this is around the cheapest I’ve seen it.

The Wolf Among Us Season 1 – $8.49 (66% off)

Telltale’s follow-up to the Walking Dead is based on the Fable comic series; you don’t need to have read them but it certainly doesn’t hurt. Plus, they’re great reading. I haven’t played this yet, but have heard only positive things and strongly recommend it. This is the best price I’ve seen and I have a hard time imagining they’ll charge less than this until after all the episodes are released.

Tomb Raider 2013 – $4.99 (75% off) / Game of the Year $7.49 (75% off)

I finally started playing this game and let me tell you, it is great. If you enjoyed the Uncharted series, this game is like that, but with a more intuitive control scheme and obviously better graphical fidelity being on PC. For the price, this is a no-brainer.

The Game of the Year edition is $7.49 and includes DLC. That said, the DLC is pretty much multiplayer based from what I’ve heard.  The only caveat here is this is relatively standard sale pricing for this game at this point, so don’t rush to buy it on sale price alone (though this matches the lowest prices I’ve seen).

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance $14.99 (50% off)

Unlike the Metal Gear Solid games, this is a Devil May Cry-style action game, and supposedly a solid PC port. This is the cheapest I’ve seen it so far, and is probably worth it at this price if you have interest.  I’d imagine it will be 3-6 months before we see this at $9.99 or less.

BONUS – Flash Sale and Community Sale (through 8:59 PM 6/22/14)

I’m not going to cover ALL of these, but here’s what I’d recommend from the current Flash Sale and Community Sale…

Sleeping Dogs $3.99 (80% off) – Great game, but on sale CONSTANTLY and was free on PS+ as well. If you didn’t get it and have a PC that can run it with the high-resolution texture pack, and like open-world sandbox games in this genre, the game looks amazing and also plays well.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron $14.99 (75% 0ff) & War for Cybertron: $4.99 (75% off)

I’ve only played War for Cybertron but it was good and is worth $5, plus it has co-op. The newer game should probably be less than $15 at this point and has no co-op but still has good reviews, if you like Transformers.

Metro: Last Light Complete Edition $6.79 (66% off)

Yeah, so seriously, if you have a PC that can run this, go buy it immediately. Solid 15 hours or so of single player FPS gameplay, plus all the DLC. Showcase graphics for the PC as a platform as well as just a really solid and fun gameplay experience.  Best price I’ve seen this for so far.

Betrayer $3.99 (75% off)

Best price I’ve seen on this game, which has overall positive reviews. Worth checking out at this price.

Lone Survivor $3.74 (75% off)

Also a very nice little game, was free on PS+ but worth the price if you don’t have it yet.

 Woot! $219 HP14 Chromebook Refurbished

This deal is back after running a few weeks ago, and it is awesome. The HP14 comes in a few different models. The specific one on offer here is pretty great as it has:

  • 32 GB SSD – Great for saving local content via Google Play, or for space to install Ubuntu and games
  • 4 GB RAM – One of the few Chromebooks you can get with 4 GB RAM, which also improves Ubuntu Performance
  • 200 MB / Month 4G Internet free for life (via included SIM card and modem)

This is a fantastic back-up Laptop. It boots in 6 seconds, is ideal for installing Ubuntu and playing indie or emulated games on, and handles regular internet tasks like a champ. It also has very good build quality for a Chromebook, with a great trackpad and decent keyboard, and overall nice fit and finish.

Also note that this specific version is normally $379 and only available at Costco, so you’re getting it for a really good price.

The main knock on it as a device is the relatively low-res screen. It is a gloss finish TN panel at 720p resolution, which gives you pretty low PPI compared to a more expensive device. It does have decent brightness.  I personally don’t mind the screen but if you are used to Retina or Nexus quality, you may have problems.

Finally, I ordered one of these myself. It shipped very quickly, and was in fantastic condition, and also had all the Google offers available for redemption (including 12 Gogo online flight passes, 60 days Google Play All Access Music free, and two years 100 GB Google Drive storage).

Humble Audiobook Bundle 2

For any price, 4 Audiobooks.  For $9.23 (as of this writing) or more, get 10 Audiobooks.  For $10 or more, get 11 Audiobooks.

This is just an insane, absurd, ludicrous amount of value for $10.  Titles:

Any price:

  • The Perfect Storm
  • Strip Tease
  • Red Rising
  • Grave Sight

Beat average price ($9.23) – above titles plus:

  • Rules of Prey
  • Baudolino
  • Bearing an Hourglass
  • How Music Works
  • Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom
  • Hollow World

$10 or more – above titles plus:

  • Fight Club

These are all DRM free so they’ll work on PC, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS.
